These lectures, intended for Master and PhD students, were originally developed for a course delivered at the Stefan Meyer Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Phenomenologically oriented, they are intended as complementary material to basic courses in particle and nuclear physics. The spectra of light and heavy mesons and baryons are described. Fundamental properties based on symmetries are introduced, followed by mixing angles and decay constants. The magnetic moments of light baryons are calculated and compared with data. The experimental evidence for multiquark hadrons (tetraquarks and pentaquarks) is presented. Methods of calculating decay angular distributions and determining masses and widths of resonances are derived. A set of problems and solutions is included. |
